It is a legal responsibility of every employer to provide a safe and health workplace
for every employee, contractor and visitor as specified in the Occupational Health
and Safety Act 2004.
In 2007, 162 Australians died in workplace accidents and over 150,000 lodged WorkCover
claims. The cost of this death and injury was estimated at over $30 billion, aside
from the immeasurable impact on affected individuals, families and the wider community.
The Act specifies workplace safety laws and describes the duties of both employers
and employees to help create safer and healthier workplaces. In principle, the Act
states that:
Effective management of Occupational Health and Safety requires the systematic identification,
assessment and control of risks associated with workplace hazards.
